The Edmonton Chamber Music Society once again brings together some of North America’s finest musicians in its fourth annual Summer Solstice Festival.

The 2011 Festival features Angela Cheng (piano), Lara St. John (violin), Roman Borys (cello), Alvin Chow (piano), Anthony Flynn (tenor), Marina Hoover (cello), Jasmine Lin (violin), Michael Massey (piano), Annalee Patipatanakoon (violin) , Charles Pilon (viola) and Patricia Tao (piano & Festival Director).

June 24 (8 p.m.) Gypsy Voices

The plangent strains of Gypsy music open the Festival Friday evening. A complex blend of European folk themes and traditional Roma songs, “Gypsy” music has both fed and been nourished by the musical language of its setting. Gypsy Voices traces its sonorities from Classical to contemporary expression in works by Haydn, Brahms, Bartók, Leó Weiner and Gene Pritsker. Three new works written for violinist Lara St. John highlight the evening.

June 25 (8 p.m.) Liszt: Revolutionary Romantic

Dr. Michael Roeder, Narrator & Host

On Saturday the Festival pays homage to Franz Liszt, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of his birth. Dr. Michael Roeder illuminates the expressiveness, harmonic complexity, and revolutionary elements of Liszt’s compositions with comments and stories woven into Liszt: Revolutionary Romantic. Works include the moving and evocative Vallée d’Obermann, the dramatic Mephisto Waltz and Angélus! Prière aux anges gardiens, from Liszt’s third book of Années de pèlerinage.

June 26 (3 p.m.) Summer Passion

On Sunday, the Festival once again concludes with Summer Passion, classics from the chamber music repertoire. The program includes Anton Arensky’s Piano Trio No. 1, a gracefully melodic, at times elegiac, work and Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat Major. Written not long after his marriage to the pianist Clara Wieck, it is an expression of their shared musical passions and a tribute to her virtuosity.
