Winner of the Shean Piano Competition 2012

On Friday, May 18, 2012 – after two days of amazing and very high calibre competition – pianist Adam Żukiewicz (28 years old), originally from Jawor, Poland and currently studying in Toronto, was awarded the $8,000 top prize in The Shean Piano Competition. He has also won the opportunity to play with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at a future date. Mr. Żukiewicz was one of 6 finalists chosen from the 23 submitted entries to compete in the 2012 Shean Piano Competition on May 17 and 18.


The complete results of the Competition were as follows:

First Place and $8,000 – Adam Żukiewicz (Jawor, Poland)

Second Place and $5,000 – Lisa Tahara (Vancouver, BC)

Third Place and $4,000 – Steven Massicotte (Montréal, QC)

Fourth Place and $3,000 – Michelle Powell (Grande Prairie, AB)

(Tie) Fifth Place and $2,000 each – Benjamin Chapman (Sydney, NSW, Australia) and Rich Coburn (Nelson, BC)

Lisa Tahara also won $1,000 Paul J. Bourret Prize for Best Performance of the Test Piece – Valse, Op. 38 by Alexander Scriabin.

The adjudicators for this year’s Competition were David Hoyt, Chair; Jane Coop and William Wolfram.

The 2013 Shean Strings Competition takes place May 17 and 18, 2013 in Edmonton with an $8,000 Top Prize and the opportunity to perform with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. The $1,000 Paul J. Bourret Prize for Best Performance of the Test Piece will also be awarded.

AUDITION NOTICE

Artistic Directors Farren Timoteo and Jeff Unger would like to invite trained and/or experienced non-equity actors and pianists to audition for Alberta Opera’s upcoming touring production of Sleeping Beauty.

AUDITIONS

10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. June 11th, 2012

WHERE

Citadel Theatre, 2nd floor, Classroom B 9828 – 101A Avenue

ACTORS

The auditions will be organized into fifteen-minute slots. Actors are asked to prepare two contrasting musical theatre songs as well as a short comedic monologue. We ask that your songs be cut versions but be prepared to perform them in their entirety if requested. An accompanist will be provided. Please provide a headshot and resume.

PIANISTS

Interviews will be scheduled throughout the day. Please bring a short musical theatre piece to perform. You may also be asked to sight-read.

Alberta Opera is celebrating its 29th season with an exciting new musical adaptation of Sleeping Beauty (Music by Jeff Unger, Book by Farren Timoteo).

Jeff Unger has composed more than a dozen new musicals for Alberta Opera and this project marks his fifth collaboration with Farren Timoteo. Their previous works have toured the province extensively and garnered numerous acknowledgements from the Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards. Sleeping Beauty will make its world debut on October 26th, 2012 at the Westbury Theatre and will then embark on a vast tour of Alberta, which will conclude in June.

Auditions for Da Camera Singers June 4-5, 2012

Auditions for the Da Camera Singers will be held on Monday June 4 and Tuesday June 5, 2012 between 5:45pm and 9:30pm at Holy Trinity Anglican Church (10037 84 Av).

The audition will be approximately ten minutes in length. New auditions will be required to sing one song of their choice (accompanist provided - please bring a copy of the music), perform a range test and musicianship (sightreading) tests. You will also be required to sing your voice part of "Locus Iste" by Bruckner.
